Voice and throat difficulties can arise from a number of different causes, including misuse of your voice, muscle tension, vocal cord nodules, polyps, vocal cord haemorrhage, head and neck cancer and laryngo-pharyngeal reflux.

Voice therapy can help to improve your voice and throat problems by teaching you about your voice and giving you exercises to help you learn how to use your voice and throat muscles properly again.

The Speech and Language Therapy Team currently offers voice therapy at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital in outpatient clinics.

We offer appointments during the day, and we also have dedicated evening clinics across sites every fortnight to offer our patients a flexible and easy to access service.

What will Speech and Language Therapy involve?

The Therapist will assess your voice/throat and give you exercises and advice to follow at home.

Therapy input can vary from one appointment to longer-term intervention.  Your voice/throat problems may not get better straight away but you can expect gradual improvement over time, if you follow the advice given.
